Matthew E Trice is a twin cities based saxophonist, arranger, composer and educator. Matthew was raised in Belmar, New Jersey where he started playing the saxophone at age 11. It was until he discovered the richness of jazz and improvisation at the age of 14 did he decide to dedicate his life to music. In 2013, Trice moved to Minnesota to pursue a bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance at the McNally-Smith College of Music in Saint Paul. After graduating in 2017, he continues to play around the Twin Cities in various different collectives.
Matthew is also an educator. Upon attending McNally-Smith, Matthew co-directed an educational Music Program called ‘Rock of Ages’ which lets adults with different disabilities play music (Rock & Roll) through Lifeworks; a non-profit organization. Matthew now teaches band as a part of the Extended Day Learning program for Saint Paul Public Schools.
“I believe music should be fun, first. My students will learn whatever they want to learn. Whatever particular topic my students want to cover, we will cover. Whether it’s learning how to solo, or how to play one note. Whether its playing Charlie Parker, Led Zeppelin, or Kendrick Lamar; whether its funk, jazz, rock, or the theme from Pink Panther. We can cover any contemporary style.”
My goal for my students is to first: be excited about the music and whatever they want to do. Next, to be confident about it. Then, to feel proud about it.
Matthew is available for contemporary saxophone lessons at any level, as well as beginner-intermediate piano lessons. Matthew also teaches lessons in composing, arranging and music theory.
