Laurent Kuehnl

Hello, my name is Laurent and I am excited to help you reach your vocal goals. Whether it be for fun, personal development, or professional performance (and everything in between) my knowledge and experience can provide the foundation and/or technical polish for a lifetime of healthy music making. A Minnesota native, I received my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Minnesota and my Master of Music from the Johns Hopkins University. Most recently I have completed the coursework for my Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Minnesota, where I studied vocal performance and pedagogy. There I was a graduate assistant and taught private voice lessons and group voice. As a performer, I have interpreted leading roles throughout the Twin Cities with the University of Minnesota, Bach Society of Minnesota, Skylark Opera, and Opera on the Lake, among others.

As a pedagogue, I take a holistic approach to teaching voice. Among the vast plethora of techniques and approaches to singing, I focus on the unique needs of the individual and help them make technique work for them rather than against them. While grounded in the foundational techniques of the bel canto school of singing, my teaching emphasizes balance, comfort, and health, but most importantly –  enjoyment. We must take pleasure in our singing. Moving beyond the basics, that provide for the student a sense of freedom and control over their sound, I tailor my approach to accommodate whatever genre and style the student wishes to learn.

Aside from music, well, I’m a total nerd and I love to bring my unique energy into lessons. I am an eclectic reader and enjoy sci fi (PKD, Leguin), fantasy, classic, and contemporary literature. I am a bit of a Trekkie and must admit to binge watching a few different Star Trek series! Of course I also like games, be they video games or tabletop games with friends and family. Who doesn’t like game night, right? Outside of entertainment, I enjoy running, weight lifting, and yoga. Finally, I have quite a passion for cooking and discovering new and delicious recipes. I hope this provides a bit of a window into my personality. I am looking forward to helping you achieve your goals.
